Connect SMTP

Send ShopQuotes emails from any mailbox or relay using SMTP.

SMTP connects almost any email account to ShopQuotes: your web host's mailbox, Zoho, Yahoo, iCloud, Amazon SES, or a transactional relay. You enter the server details and login your provider gives you.

Note: Available on paid plans. If you use Gmail or Microsoft 365, sign in with Google or Microsoft instead. It is simpler and does not need an app password.

What you need

Five details from your email provider or IT admin.

SMTP host

The server address, for example smtp.yourhost.com.

Port

Usually 587. Some providers use 465.

Encryption

TLS with port 587. SSL with port 465. None only if your provider says so.

Username

Often your full email address. Some providers issue a separate SMTP username.

Password

Your mailbox password, or an app password if your account has two step verification. Relays issue an SMTP password or key that is different from your login.

Not sure what yours are?

Paste this into ChatGPT or any AI assistant, replacing the provider name, and it will give you the details to enter.

I need the SMTP settings to send email from my [PROVIDER NAME] account through another app. Give me the SMTP host, the port and encryption to use (TLS or SSL), what to enter as the username, and whether I need an app password or a separate SMTP password instead of my normal login. If an app password is needed, tell me where to create it.

Common ones for reference:

Zoho Mail

smtp.zoho.com, port 587, TLS. Email address and password, or an app password if two factor is on.

Yahoo Mail

smtp.mail.yahoo.com, port 465, SSL. Email address and an app password.

iCloud Mail

smtp.mail.me.com, port 587, TLS. Email address and an app specific password.

Amazon SES

email-smtp.<region>.amazonaws.com, port 587, TLS. SMTP credentials from the SES console, not your AWS login.

Web host mailbox

Usually mail.yourdomain.com or the host's own server, port 587 TLS or 465 SSL, with your email address and mailbox password. Check your hosting control panel.

Connect

  1. Go to Email notifications > Email providers.

  2. Under Custom provider, choose SMTP.

  3. Enter the From email and From name.

  4. Enter the host, port, encryption, username and password.

  5. Click Add sender. ShopQuotes logs in to the server to check the details before saving.

Note: If this is your first sender, it becomes your primary sender automatically and customer emails go out from it. If you already had one, open the new sender's menu under Manage senders and click Make primary to switch.

If it fails

ShopQuotes tells you why before anything is saved.

Authentication failed, the username or password is incorrect

The server rejected the login. Check for typos. Use the SMTP password, not your web login. Check whether your provider needs an app password or issues a separate SMTP username.

This account requires an app password

Your account has two step verification. Create an app password in your provider's security settings and use it here.

The server requires encryption

Set Encryption to TLS with port 587, or SSL with port 465.

Could not resolve SMTP host

The host is misspelled. Copy it from your provider's help page.

Timed out connecting

Wrong port, or the provider blocks it. Try the other port and encryption pair.

Connection refused

The server is not listening on that port. Try the other port and encryption pair.

TLS handshake failed

Port and encryption do not match. 587 goes with TLS, 465 goes with SSL.

This SMTP server does not advertise AUTH

The server does not accept logins on this port. Try 587 with TLS, or ask your provider for the authenticated SMTP port.

Later problems

Things that can go wrong after the sender is working.

Sender shows Invalid

The password changed or the app password was revoked. Open Change settings, enter the new password and save.

Emails land in spam

Ask your email provider to confirm SPF and DKIM are set up for your domain. Send a test from Send test email and check the headers.

Emails send but stop after a while

You hit your provider's daily sending limit. Mailbox providers allow a few hundred a day. For volume, use a relay such as SendGrid, Resend or Amazon SES.
